Lofoten battle: colour vs. monochrome

I still remember that I had been very unhappy about the rainy days we had in the first half of our holiday. Reflecting back, I think it was mostly because I was worried not to see any auroras at all and everything was just negative and dull.

Well, we eventually had the opportunity to view the gorgeous auroras and the mood changed. Most amazingly, I must admit that I almost like the monochrome photos that I took during rainy or stormy weather better and I don’t miss the “golden light” moments at all anymore.

I have processed some photos both in colour and monochrome and would like to start a little battle with these two photos. The subject is always similar but does not have to be exactly the same shot. I’m looking forward to any comments…. let the battle begin…!

Hmmm, this is a tough one!!, I think both are superb…but the B/W version is my favourite…just. Wonderful images Sandra ! :-)

Monocrome wirkt auf mich mehr surrealistsch, hærtere kanten und stærkerrer Kontrast, die Blaue Version wirkt ruhiger mehr vertræumt. Beide sind fantastisch , mir persønlich gefællt Monocrome besser!

Thank you, too, for your interesting view :)

Interesting indeed. I’m in camp with Alister and Horia. Each has it’s own strength and as such is outstanding in its own regard. The subtlety of the color image is very pleasing and peaceful while the contrast and silvery tones of the foreground make the black and white version striking and of great appeal.

I had some interesting comments on my Facebook page that I would like to share:

Alister Benn wrote:
I’m not crazy on the word “battle” when trying to compare two works of art! – I like the contrast better in the BW version, but the color does have some very delicate tomes. They are both quite different and deserve attention individually…

Horia Bogdan wrote:
Their both very beautiful and as Alister said, they definitely deserve individual attention, however, i know that it’s most difficult to chose among your own work, so maybe a few outside opinions are welcomed That said, the contrast in the BW is indeed making the mountains in the back stand out better and i also love the silky look of the foreground stream better. Looking forward for more of your nice work!

Both versions are very interesting but that strikes me most is the one in color, it makes me feel really inside the photo, it seems more ” alive”, I really like the soft colors. From the technical point of view, you know, both very very good.

unbedingt in Farbe!

Wayne Rhodus wrote:
Without question the monochrome version is much better … better tonality, texture and oh so liquid in flow!

Andreas Gerth wrote:
Mir gefallen beide, jedoch spricht mich das farbige mehr an

Andrew Hardacre wrote:
Without question the colour version is much better. Maybe. To be honest the distance pleased me more in the colour version and the foreground in monochrome. It’s subjective, mood driven and there are no absolutes.
